Fraction Calculator FAQs

To add fractions with different denominators: 1) Find the Least Common Denominator (LCD) - the smallest number both denominators divide into evenly, 2) Convert each fraction to an equivalent fraction with the LCD, 3) Add the numerators while keeping the denominator the same, 4) Simplify the result if possible. For example: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. Our calculator automatically handles all these steps and shows you the work.

A proper fraction has a numerator smaller than its denominator (e.g., 3/4, 2/5), representing a value less than 1. An improper fraction has a numerator equal to or greater than its denominator (e.g., 7/4, 5/3), representing a value equal to or greater than 1. Improper fractions can be converted to mixed numbers (e.g., 7/4 = 1¾). Use our Convert mode to easily switch between these formats.

To simplify a fraction: 1) Find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, 2) Divide both the numerator and denominator by the GCD. For example, to simplify 8/12: the GCD of 8 and 12 is 4, so 8÷4 = 2 and 12÷4 = 3, giving us 2/3. Use our Simplify mode to automatically reduce any fraction to its simplest form and see equivalent fractions.

Multiplying fractions is straightforward: 1) Multiply the numerators together, 2) Multiply the denominators together, 3) Simplify if needed. For example: 2/3 × 3/4 = (2×3)/(3×4) = 6/12 = 1/2. For mixed numbers, first convert them to improper fractions, then multiply. The calculator shows each step and automatically simplifies the result.

To divide fractions, use the "multiply by the reciprocal" rule: 1) Keep the first fraction as is, 2) Flip the second fraction (swap numerator and denominator), 3) Multiply the fractions. For example: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 4/2 = 2. Remember: dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. Our calculator shows this conversion step clearly.

To convert a fraction to a decimal, simply divide the numerator by the denominator. For example: 3/4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. For mixed numbers, convert the whole number separately and add it to the fraction's decimal value (e.g., 2¾ = 2 + 0.75 = 2.75). Use our Convert mode to instantly convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages with full precision.

To convert a decimal to a fraction: 1) Count the decimal places, 2) Write the decimal as a fraction over 1 followed by that many zeros, 3) Simplify. For example: 0.75 has 2 decimal places, so 0.75 = 75/100 = 3/4. For repeating decimals (e.g., 0.333...), use special techniques or our calculator which handles them automatically. The calculator shows the simplified fraction and all intermediate steps.

To compare fractions: 1) Convert both to the same denominator (find LCD), or 2) Convert both to decimals and compare. For example: comparing 2/3 and 3/4: convert to 8/12 and 9/12, so 3/4 is larger. Alternatively, 2/3 ≈ 0.667 and 3/4 = 0.75, so 3/4 is larger. Use our Compare mode to instantly see which fraction is larger, with visual representation and percentage differences.
