Frequently Asked Questions

Due date calculations are estimates based on a 40-week pregnancy. Only about 5% of babies are born on their exact due date. Most babies arrive within 2 weeks before or after the estimated date. Early ultrasounds (before 12 weeks) provide the most accurate dating.

Gestational age is counted from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), which is about 2 weeks before conception. Fetal age (also called embryonic age) is the actual age of the developing baby, counted from conception. Medical professionals typically use gestational age.

Your due date may be adjusted based on ultrasound measurements, especially if there's a significant difference from LMP-based dating. Early ultrasounds are most accurate for dating. Irregular cycles, late ovulation, or uncertain LMP dates can also lead to adjustments.

Early term: 37-38 weeks
Full term: 39-40 weeks
Late term: 41 weeks
Post term: 42+ weeks

Babies born at 39-40 weeks have the best health outcomes. Your healthcare provider will monitor closely if pregnancy extends beyond 40 weeks.

For IVF pregnancies, the due date is calculated from the embryo transfer date. For Day 3 embryo transfers, add 263 days (or subtract 3 days then add 266). For Day 5 blastocyst transfers, add 261 days (or subtract 5 days then add 266). IVF dating is typically very accurate since the exact conception/transfer date is known.
